99. Through streets are borders.

Through roads move people from A to B. The mobility network carves routes and patterns unique to the activity of residents and visitors. Often higher volume, with greater speeds these arterial roads act as borders to neighourhoods/districts within a city.

Physical flow of traffic, vehicular noise, lack of crossings, emergency priorities, and speed of traffic, are all contributing to outlining the neighbourhood that lies within. Resulting shapes are usually rectangular, due to the grid pattern of most urban transportation networks. Victoria's network is a combination of a grid and curvilinear structure; the curvy coming from Victoria's relationship to the coastline, topographical lines and large masses of bedrock. Many of these through streets were once street-car lines, dirt roads. Today we see them continue to transform with HOV lanes.
